No Lead Glass Filled Rubies Here!
Lead glass filling a NOT an accepted method of improving the appearance of ruby. Lead glass is added during heat treatment to fill in fractures
inside the ruby. Lead glass can replace a substantial amount of the actual ruby and will dramatically improve its
color, clarity and overall appearance. So much so, that a very poor quality, practically worthless, ruby can be made to
look like an expensive high quality ruby.
While looking like high quality rubies, lead glass filled rubies are actually very low quality rubies which are
worth very little (only a couple of dollars a carat) and can fracture easily. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) requires that lead glass treated rubies be labeled and disclosed as
composite rubies (not natural mined rubies). Unfortunately, lead
glass rubies are quite prevalent in the marketplace and are often unknowingly traded and sold as natural high quality rubies. Our in house GIA graduate gemologist
has received extra training
specifically for the identification of lead glass treatment in rubies. She has tested and verified that all of the rubies that we offer are free from lead glass treatment.
