Sapphires are mined all over the world. The oldest Sapphire mines are located in Sri Lanka (formerly known as Ceylon), where gemstones were mined in ancient times. Sapphires mined from Sri Lanka are still called Ceylon sapphires and are highly sought after by collectors and the public for their luminosity and brilliance. We import our Ceylon sapphires directly from Sri Lanka to make our beautiful sapphire jewelry.
Sapphires come in all shades of the rainbow including all shades of red, orange, yellow, blue, green and purple. Red sapphires are better known as rubies. In the gemstone trade any non-blue Sapphire is termed "fancy”.
Sapphire belongs to the corundum group which is set apart from other gemstones by their very good hardness (Grade 9 out of 10 on the Mohs’ scale). They are second in hardness to diamonds only (the hardest mineral on Earth!). Sapphires therefore are perfect for use in jewelry due to their scratch resistance and are now a popular diamond engagement rings alternative.
